The goal of this project is to develop and characterize a new family of bioactive glass based scaffolds with novel chemical composition, e.g. incorporating selected therapeutic ions for specific cellular response, e.g. angiogenic effect [1]. The scaffolds should exhibit tailorded degradability, outstanding bioactivity, drug delivery capability and bone-forming effects. The combination of bioactive glasses with biodegradable polymers to improve the fracture resistance and to increase the toughness of the scaffolds will be investigated. The morphology, physicochemical properties ,drug delivery capability and biological properties (both in vitro and in vivo) of the new scaffolds will be measured.
