PhD success - Congratulatios to Johann Cho, who recently passed his PhD oral examination (viva) at Imperial College London. The title of his PhD thesis is: Processing and characterisation of inorganic matrix composites containing carbon nanotubes. Johann's supervisors were Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini and Prof. M. Shaffer (Department of Chemistry, Imperial College). We wish Johann all success in his future carreer !

European Ceramic Society Awards
Ms Fatemeh Pishbin (PhD student supervised by Professor Aldo R. Boccaccini and Dr. Mary Ryan (Imperial College London) was awarded a Trust of the Journal of the European Ceramic Society grant valued at 500 Euro to attend the 4th International Conference on Shaping of Advanced Ceramics" held in Madrid on 16th-18th November 2009. At the conference, Fatemah won the second prize in the Student Contest for her poster/short oral presentation entitled Progress in the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of bioactive glass and bioactive glass-biopolymer composite coatings. In addition, her paper was selected for publication in a special issue related to the Conference to be published in the J Europ Ceram Soc.

Professor Boccaccini Plenary Speaker in Japan
Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini was one of the plenary speakers at the 18th Conference on Processing and Fabrication of Advanced Materials (PFAM-XVIII)), held at Tohuku University, Sendai, Japan on December 12-14, 2009. His lecture was entitled: "Progress in the Processing and Fabrication of Nanostructured Bioactive Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering"

- Farewell reception for Prof. Boccaccini at Imperial College London More than 100 guests came to the farewell reception held on 28 September 2009 at Imperial College London to mark the leaving of Prof. Boccaccini.
After almost 10 years as an academic in the Department of Materials, Prof. Boccaccini moved to Germany on 1st October 2009 as Head of the newly established Institute of Biomaterials, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Prof. Boccaccini remains a visiting professor in the Department of Materials of Imperial College.
